PAM4 modulation: cost-effective high-speed Solutions
Harnessing amplitude modulation for efficient data transmission
PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-Level) utilizes four levels of signal amplitude, allowing the transmission of 2 bits per pulse. This technology enables achieving 100G speeds with a 50Gbaud laser or 400G and 800G with a 100Gbaud laser. Currently, PAM4 is more cost-effective compared to coherent modulation, making it ideal for designing and implementing short-haul WDM solutions.
Two options are available: O-Band and C-Band wavelengths. An O-Band system with 8 or 16 channels is completely passive, offering a range of up to 25km. In contrast, a C-Band DWDM solution can be used with a typical optical line system equipped with EDFA amplifiers and dispersion compensation modules, providing transmission ranges up to 120km. Additionally, DWDM modules can be used within data centers with passive multiplexers to significantly reduce fiber rental costs, even over shorter distances.
Applications:
- O-Band solution based on PAM4 modulation
- DWDM solution based on PAM4 modulation
- 800G over DWDM using 400G transceivers
